What are antibodies?

First, let’s take a look at what antibodies are. Antibodies are proteins that are produced by B-cells, a type of white blood cell, in response to foreign invaders like bacteria or viruses. When these invaders enter the body, they cause an immune response that leads to the creation of antibodies to fight back.

There are two main types of antibodies:

  • Humoral antibodies, which are found in the blood plasma and bind to pathogens that enter the bloodstream
 
  • Cellular antibodies, which are found in tissues and respond to pathogens that enter the cells These antibodies then bind to the invaders and mark them for destruction by other components of the immune system. Antibodies are essential for fighting off pathogens, but they’re not the only immune system components.

How do antibodies strengthen your immune system?

Your immune system is made up of cells and organs that work together to keep you healthy. The organ responsible for protecting you from pathogens is the spleen. The spleen filters blood, destroying pathogens like bacteria and viruses and removing them from the body. When your body encounters a virus, antibodies are created and then travel through your blood to the spleen. There, they trigger an immune response that destroys the virus and prevents it from spreading throughout your body.

Healthy antibodies can help you fight off viruses and other pathogens and strengthen your immune system. If your immune system is strong, it can prevent disease-causing microorganisms from growing and multiplying in your body before you even get sick. When your immune system is stronger, antibodies can work together with white blood cells to fight off viruses, bacteria and other pathogens before they have a chance to spread.

As antibodies travel throughout your body, they can collect and store information about the environment they’re traveling through. This means that they can do more than just battle pathogens – they can create a map of the human body. This map shows where healthy cells and tissues are located and where pathogens are present. When an antibody has collected this information, it is bound to a protein called an antigen. Antigens travel throughout the body and alert your immune system to the presence of pathogens. Antibodies are important for fighting disease, but they also protect people from getting sick in the first place. When your body is healthy and you have a strong immune system, you’re less likely to get sick and have fewer serious health problems.

Common antibody tests

Most of the time, antibodies are tested for in the lab. There are many different kinds of antibody tests, but the most common are used to test for immunity, allergies, infections and other conditions.
