Top 6 Reasons Why You're Aging Faster Than You Think
As we grow older, the rate at which we age also speeds up. It’s a natural process that happens to everyone, but some people seem to age faster than others. Genetics is one of the many factors that determine how fast you age, but there are some things you can do to slow down the process and make your golden years last as long as possible. . . So what exactly is speeding up your aging process? Let’s take a look at the top reasons why you’re aging faster than you think, so that you can take action before it’s too late.

Stress

Stress is one of the leading reasons why people age faster. When you’re constantly feeling stressed, your body releases more cortisol, which breaks down collagen and elastin, two important proteins that promote skin elasticity and smoothness. When these two are broken down, you might notice wrinkles, sagging skin, and an overall aged appearance. Other signs of stress include breakouts, patchy skin, uneven skin tone, and acne. To reduce stress on your body, try going to therapy or opening up to a loved one, journaling, meditating, doing yoga, or exercising. These are all incredible ways to reduce stress, allow your body to heal, and age slower.

Smoking

Smoking has been linked to accelerated signs of aging, like wrinkles, sagging skin, and discoloration. When you smoke, it causes your blood vessels to narrow, which limits blood flow and nutrients to your skin. When this happens, your skin becomes dry and discolored and wrinkles at a much faster rate. When your skin is not getting enough blood flow, your body cannot produce collagen, which also leads to wrinkles forming. So not only does smoking cause wrinkles, but it also makes existing ones worse. Is your mouth dry yet? Because your skin is too! When your skin is deprived of nutrients and blood flow, it’s unable to produce enough moisture to keep your skin hydrated, leading to dry and aging skin. To age slower, put down the cigarettes and replace them with something that’s much better for you.

Poor Diet

When you’re eating lots of unhealthy fats and processed foods, your skin is not getting any nutrients, which leads to breakouts, lack of hydration, and aging. Eating a balanced diet full of healthy fats, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables can help your skin stay hydrated, healthy, and plump. If you’re struggling to find a diet that works for you, try an elimination diet and see how your skin responds. You can also try adding supplements to your diet, like collagen protein, Vitamin C, and ferulic acid, that are proven to boost skin health and reduce signs of aging. Make sure to check with your doctor before taking any supplements, as not all are created equal.

Lack of Exercise

Exercising is one of the best things you can do for your skin. When you sweat, you’re ridding your body of harmful toxins and impurities, like makeup, which causes breakouts and aging skin. When you’re working out, you’re also increasing blood flow, which leads to plump and hydrated skin. Exercising also helps reduce stress, which we already talked about and helps you sleep better. If you’re at a point in your life where you’re not able to workout, don’t worry! There are still plenty of things you can do that don’t involve a gym. Try some light yoga, walking, or meditating. The point is to get your body moving and start working on reducing stress.

UV Exposure

Most people are aware of the dangers of sun exposure, but many choose to ignore them. When you’re constantly exposing your skin to sun, it ages at a faster rate and is more likely to develop wrinkles and fine lines. There are various types of sunscreen, so make sure the one you’re using is protecting you from the sun’s harmful rays. Sunscreen is always better than nothing, but it’s best to wear protective clothing, like a hat or sunglasses, and stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you have an event coming up that requires you to stay outside for a long period of time, make sure to wear long sleeves and pants. You can also try putting sunscreen on your clothes. There are special sprays that can be applied to clothing, like hats and shirts, so you don’t have to worry about getting sunscreen on your skin.

Genetics

Did your mom age super fast? Do you and your siblings all have wrinkly skin at a young age? Genetics can play a big part in how fast you age. However, this doesn’t mean you’re doomed to have wrinkly skin at 25. You can take action to slow down the aging process so you don’t look as old as you actually are. If you’re worried about aging quickly, don’t. There are some things you can do to age slower, like exercising, eating healthy, and reducing stress. When you’re aging quickly, it can feel like there’s nothing you can do to stop it, but there are tons of things you can do to slow it down.
